“That is her secret. You see, if people knew that dolls could do things, they would make them work. So, perhaps, they have promised each other to keep it a secret.” - A little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Story::
Queen Mary’s Script is a tale of a young girl who lacks in nothing except true smiles. Her name is Mary, and in a rather cliche turn of events, she meets a doll named Clause who promises to save her.
That is, if she’s willing to trade her skin for resin.
Things quickly get turned upside down for Mary as she travels from haven to haven. She begins to see that even dolls have their own strife and the politics of their world are just as skewed as humans.
Things build up in both worlds she inhabits. Eventually, walls must break and tumble.
Characters::
Mary - A young girl with plenty of promises and not much to lose. Her world is the same shade of brown until she meets Clause. She doesn’t quite believe anything can be changed from meeting him, but she is willing to go along with what he wishes. Even if it means facing the dragon that has haunted her dreams and standing up to the Queen that does nothing to protect the citizens of her castle.
“I have no need for forgiveness. What does it teach you? Only the landmines of our relationship… as well as how fast I’ll allow you to come back to me. No… I won’t forgive… not you… not him…”
Clause - A modern day Pinocchio with a horrid personality; he seeks to right the wrongs of his past and become a human. Though his reasons are selfish and weak. They quickly crumble when the many luxuries of being a doll are taken from him bit by bit. After all… It’s never easy to face the consequences of your boyish actions.
“Surely you do not suggest that I’d allow the credit to be given to a human? A mere child, no less. You are truly insulting and your stuffing is coming out in clumps, Old Bear. Everything was done by me.. by my hands… ”
Amanda - A friend, a confidant. Yet she is lost in her world of letters and reminiscences. She knows of Mary’s life at home and is one of the only people she trusts. However it seems to be one sided. A true relationship cannot be called true if the other buries many secrets.
“I don’t want to be painted as a sad heroine. My life wasn’t all for naught. Even if it was for him, I lived for a purpose, and that’s enough for me. But I don’t expect a child to understand.”
Edmund - A doll that has seen much and lived much, despite his lack of years. He wants nothing more than to be noticed and accepted by the one he cares for most. Even so, he puts on a happy face and doesn’t mind an inevitable bad end.
“If possible… this sadness and feeling of helplessness… This feeling that I haven’t been all I could be to her… I wish it was real so I could destroy it easily… But I guess I’ll take it out on Clause instead.“
Amane - A once naive doll, brought into circumstances that were beyond anyone’s control. She’s developed a distrust for people she used to care for. She lost something important and means to take it back.
"being put in a prison together as I saw her eyes losing their shine…I could hardly believe that this was happening…we were so excited about coming here…”
Masaki - A girl that grew up with Mary, yet made no attempt to see anything more than that. Her mouth got the best of her, yet does she truly want to repent?
"I wish she would just forget it ever happened. Wouldn’t it be easier on the both of us?"
